How to Sew Your Own Scrubs

Learn how to sew your own scrubs with these simple instructions. You need a sewing machine, thread, fabric, scissors and a pattern that you like.

  1. First: Select a pattern from your local fabric store

Go to your favorite fabric or craft store to select a pattern. You can find books of patterns near the fabrics. Flip through the books until you see a style of scrubs that you like. The pattern should have a corresponding number next to the picture. This is the pattern number. The actual patterns are kept in large filing cabinets near you. When you find your pattern, make sure that you choose the correct size.

  2. Second: Select an appropriate fabric for your scrubs

On the back of your pattern, there is a guide to selecting how much fabric you need to make the scrubs. When you find the fabric that you want to purchase, keep in mind the rules your mother taught you about laundry. Is this fabric likely to shrink in the wash? Purchase appropriately; the attendant at the fabric counter can cut the right length for you.

  3. Third: Cut out your pattern

Lay your pattern out on a flat surface and align with the cloth. Cut along the black lines provided in the pattern. Use straight pins for accuracy.

  4. Fourth: Sew your scrubs

Putting the right sides (or patterned sides) of the cloth together, sew your scrubs according to the directions that came with your pattern. Remember to remove the pins and paper from your cloth before you start sewing. Sewing over pins can break a sewing machine relatively quickly.

  5. Fifth: Iron and wear your scrubs

Turn your scrubs right side out. Your scrubs are now ready to wear. Pressing the seams and the hems with an iron gives them a more polished look.
